Pacquiao-Hatton fearless forecast who’s wearing the Poker face..

“I wanna hold em like they do in Texas Plays, Fold em let em hit me raise it…” an excerpt of Lady Gaga’s no.1 hit Poker face…
This is what Ricky Hatton’s game plan come this Saturday when he exchange gloves with pound per pound king Manny Pacquiao although this is not encourage but this is the only way to frustrate Manny. Hold, fold and hit Ricky has to do all that if he wants to win against the Filipino phenom. Manny on the other hand will have to double more on head movements going side to side instead of coming forward. This time there would be no questions about mismatch like the Dela Hoya fight or how Manny takes a punch in the bigger weights there would be no doubt if Hatton can take a much quicker opponent like the way he handled Paulie Malignaggi. It’s dead even and the better fighter always comes out victorious in the end. I would base my fearless forecast in three aspects which is speed, power and execution I will try to cover all the bases without any biased or prejudice.
Speed- Manny
It’s Manny’s bread and butter but what makes it a powerful and deadly weapon is the power behind it. The formula behind speed would be distance against time and Manny always finds the right leverage to produce short routes towards his opponent’s body. Ricky Hatton’s stoppage against Paulie Malignaggi made a statement about how he deals with faster opponents but Malignaggi doesn’t have the power to boost his speed. Speed kills and it would take a very strong body shot to slow down Manny.
Power- Hatton
Hatton is clearly the big man in the ring a natural light welterweight who never tasted defeat on this division. He would bulldoze his way against Manny who never tasted real action while moving up. David Diaz was a sitting duck and Oscar gave little resistance so this would be Manny’s biggest test so far after moving up in weight.
Execution- Manny
No matter how sound or how technical Hatton will be in fight night he will still be back to his old brawler days simply because its how he plays the game. The addition of Mayweather Sr. would improve his technical side but like they say you cannot teach old dogs new tricks. Execution plays a vital role and Manny has a slight advantage on that department. Yeah anybody can beat an old and dehydrated Dela Hoya or a lesser athletic champion in Diaz but the manner Manny Pacquiao performs it was one of his best technical and almost perfect execution.
Still it’s anybody’s ball game… One punch can make a difference…
My fearless forecast will have to go to Manny by KO in round 5.
This Saturday we will all be anticipating one of boxing’s greatest showdowns… let’s see who’s wearing a Poker Face…
Lady Gaga take it from here…

Pacquiao-Hatton Tale of the Tape

It was my 10th birthday when my mother promised me a BMX bike for a gift. With only a week to go before my said birthday I had sleepless nights; waking up in the middle of the night anticipating the day I could hold my new bike.
The Pacquiao-Hatton fight is coming with barely 4 days to go before fight night the feeling of anticipation and excitement makes me reminisce my 10th birthday minus the sleepless nights with some exception when I would have to sleep outside our room after a word war fight with my wife.
It has been on the news and on the internet since the negotiation started and all the trash talks, predictions and promises the culmination would be just 4 days from now. Ricky Hatton has vowed a knockout win and Manny Pacquiao who remains to be mum about any prediction promise the fight fans a fight they would not forget. Tomorrow I would write my fearless forecast for the Pacquiao-Hatton fight but for now let’s all see the tale of the tape… by the way my BMX bike lasted only four days when our neighbor take matters on his own hand deciding to snatch my bike in our garage and sold it to a nearby junkshop…

Gerry Penalosa’s Autumn promise..

Simeon Dumdum Jr.’s new book “Ah, Wilderness” describe Autumn as part of falling that constantly goes on in the world.
Gerry Penalosa started as a professional boxer twenty years ago and after 20 undefeated fights his unscratched record has come into a halt when Samuel Duran scored a split decision win in a fateful August night in 1992. Gerry from that point bounce back and eventually won his first WBC super flyweight belt. Nicknamed “Fearless” Gerry who lives and eats boxing captured his second world title and in a second weight division 11 years after disposing up and coming Mexican star Jhonny Gonzalez. Last Saturday was supposed to be Gerry’s final fight. He could have chosen a sub par fighter or someone who has puffy hands that no matter how many power shots connected Gerry would still come out smiling. But Gerry had to live up to his name fighting a devastating puncher and doing it in his opponent’s home turf is somewhat in every way fearless. Juan Manuel Lopez the superbantam kingpin is the equivalent local hero to the Philippines Manny Pacquiao a complete fighter who fought his opponents mostly in round 1 where his last three bouts ended. Gerry fought Juanma mostly in spurts when Lopez showered him with punches from the body and head. Gerry’s threshold for pain was unfathomable it was his chin that gotten him all the way to fight 63.. he was never been down in his storied career and he isn’t planning to end up in the canvass in his last fight either. There were gym rumors when he stood his ground against Manny Pacquiao on their occasional sparring way back then. Their were times Manny got into him but there were also times when Gerry caught Pacquiao with his patented right hook. Their sparring were so intense that coaches and people would eventually stop them in the middle of the ring. Gerry made a good script on his finale fight, surviving the early rounds and dominate Juanma in the later rounds but Lopez refuse to follow and made his own. Freddie Roach had to make a decision and stopping the fight was the right and logical thing to do. It save Gerry’s never been down streak and most of all his life. He fought a gallant fight and his heart was as big as his 5 foot 4 frame body but he was badly beaten and we could never know how much more his 36 year old body can take the punishment. Juanma as good as he is has never encountered such fighter like Gerry. His win has not only elevate him to the pound per pound ranks but his gaining experienced would put his career in a different maturity.
“All this falling finds a summing up in Autumn, when the world begins to get cold and the trees cast off billions of bright-colored leaves.”
Gerry is like a leaf clinging to it’s branches but no matter how tight he holds the promise of Autumn will always comes… this time Gerry let go his hands…it’s time..falling in grace with people he loves extending their arms and like the promise of Autumn a new beginning begins. Goodluck Gerry!

The Element of Suprise..

An element of surprise has got to be something unexpected and unaware of. Gerry Peñalosa has boldly predicted that he will caught Juan Manuel Lopez in a surprise of his life come this Saturday in their head to head matchup in Lopez own turf.
Gerry must have a very high confidence in himself since he is way beyond the underdog status for others this is a mismatch in the making but for Gerry this is an opportunity to show the world how great he is. For starter Gerry started his professional career in 1989 and Lopez was only 6 years old at that time a difference of 11 years in age is quite a huge gap. Juanma have a 3 inches advantage in height and reach a big plus against Gerry who had difficulty fighting opponents taller than him. Gerry who lost twice to In-Joo Cho and Masamori Tokuyama are both five foot seven fighters who box and move against Penalosa. Juan Manuel Lopez is an undefeated fighter who packs a whooping power in both hands and has the speed to confuse and give Peñalosa his first knockout loss in his career. The common denominator of the two pugilists will have to be Daniel Ponce De Leon wherein Penalosa had to fight 12 full rounds against De Leon and losing by unanimous decision. Lopez only needed less than a minute to dispose De Leon in a stunning first round knockout with 2:25 left in the first round. By far Penalosa’s memorable fight would have to be against Jhonny Gonzalez who was 5’7 ½” who dominated Penalosa in almost all rounds until a kidney shot was delivered by Gerry sending Gonzalez to the ground in the 7th round. If there is one reason that Gerry would come out victorious then no doubt it would be his experience fighting 62 fights compared to Lopez 24 has leveled the playing field. Gerry would have to use whatever tactics and experienced in order to come out the victor against Lopez.
An element of surprise is raring to happen but Lopez knows he has to stand his ground. A young fighter is impatient enough to undergo the process in dissecting a boxing match… he wants it done and over with but a veteran knows the perfect time to unleash its power shots. All Gerry has to do is to survive the early rounds and slowly dissect Lopez in the later rounds. There isn’t much weakness for Lopez to take advantage with but he still has flaws. This Saturday we are in for a good treat and for sure we are in for a big surprise… Will it be Lopez’s youth or Gerry’s experienced we never know… that’s the element of surprise.

The Celtics Blues

Rajon Rondo dribbles the ball and Ray Allen after finding an open space got a pass and a quick three point shot with less than 3 seconds left in regulation. The Celtics celebrated their win but left the court in a sour note…
Despite leveling their first round duel with the Chicago Bulls, Boston in some instance was scrambling and on the verge of losing game 2 when they allow Ben Gordon to score 42 points and succumbed to 14 block shots with Tyrus Thomas making 6 out of it. Losing team skipper Kevin Garnett was a big blowout to the Celtics. He was the vocal leader and gives the team its defensive presence in the paint. Their game one loss was a wake up call and Boston has to do better in terms of team chemistry and finding ways to win without Garnett. Winning a championship would be the ultimate goal in any team but defending it would be the ultimate price of redemption. The loss to the Knicks, Bobcats, Indiana, Golden State and the LA Clippers were not coincidental or lack of focus it was just that teams are always preparing for the defending champion. They are practicing how to lessen Paul Pierce output, neutralize Allen’s shooting and being more physical to Garnett’s low post threat. Everyone is trying to take a bite on the Celtics and making it a bench mark to their team’s development.
“Big Baby” Glenn Davis has step up on his role as Garnett’s replacement but the big blow comes when Leon Powe got an injury after game two and will have to skip the remaining games in the playoffs. Leon who averages 7.7 ppg and 4.9 reb is a good contributor and a good role player to Celtics depleted roster. Well, they will have to make the best out of their reserves with Mikki Moore and Stephon Marburry.
Game 3 will be at the United Center in Chicago with Rajon Rondo having a sprained right ankle and with no Garnett and Powe the Celtics will have to dig deep and rely mostly in Pierce and Allen.
Ray Allen knows Game 2 was a close victory but going into Game 3 there isn’t going to be a lucky streak especially if you’re playing in a hostile environment. The Celtics are having the blues… And it’s time Pierce to step up a notch higher… he was their leader when they were 24-58 and he knows how to overcome adversity… enough about the blues… it’s just a color anyways.
We can never questioned the heart of a champion…….

Brian Viloria’s Fairy tale ending…

Brian Viloria fought Fred Herberto Valdez in an unfamiliar territory in Aguascalientes Mexico. He was fighting in an open ring under the prickly heat of the sun the former world champion was not even the main event but that didn’t bothered Viloria as he continues to pounce his opponent and won a knockout in the third round.
It was not a rags to riches story for Viloria. The former Olympian was only 25 years old when he fought and knock the reigning WBC flyweight champion Eric Ortiz the win put him in the limelight and after a succesful defense all went downhill when he lost to Omar Niño once and a No contest on their rematch. It was already a wake up call for Brian who had to change coaches successively. His lost to Edgar Sosa derailed Viloria’s comeback and was the unforgotten fighter for quite sometime.
Brian had to change his lifestyle and try to dig deeper and find the ferocity and the hunger to be back as a champion once again. He was a lost soul trying to find meaning on his boxing life. He went back in training and move into a small apartment where he just eats , sleep and train. He had to be active and fought five times in just a year. The road for glory seemed to be difficult for Brian but he never complained because he knows that’s what it takes to be a real champion.
Last Saturday he fought Ulises Solis for the IBF flyweight title this was a make or break fight for Brian and he knows there were a lot at stake. Solis had been a great champion and packs a powerful left on his arsenal. Fighting in his home place makes it extra special but winning the title makes all his hardwork rewarding. Brian was all focus as he never gave the former champion a chance to be technical as he rained Solis with lead rights and quick reflexes. Ulises succumbed to Viloria’s pressure and walk into Brian’s short right and was counted out by the referee. Brian won the IBF title but it wasn’t like the first time when he scored a quick knockout against Ortiz. Yes he still have to undergo 11 rounds against a granite jaw and a talented technician in Solis. He still have to worked hard to redeem himself and the reward was unexplainable joy… Viloria is now a legitimate champion and was quick to say that it was a perfect fairy tale ending. Silly Brian… it’s only the beginning.. only the beginning.
