Boxing monikers have long been intriguing and funny in some ways particularly on one boxer nicknamed “Rush hour”. I mean does he look like Chris Tucker or does he have moves like Jackie Chan? The 6-foot-1 Ali Funeka maybe taller than the average lightweight fighters but he is as agile and as quick as any other 135lb fighter out there. He looks like a welterweight but surprisingly fought two divisions lighter. That’s why it’s hard not to notice Funeka he has the height and reach advantage and he is a technical fighter. Zahir Raheem the boxer who out fought Eric Morales was such a prima donna that he was such a pain in the ass for promoters to deal with and so Ali Funeka brought Raheem back to Earth with a sensational fourth round knockout in front of his hometown fans. That fight gave Funeka a title shot against Nate Campbell but failed to win Campbell’s belt after Campbell out point Funeka for a majority decision win but the belts are already declared vacant after Nate went two pounds overweight. Funeka was again given a title shot for the vacant IBF lightweight title against Joan Guzman the 122 pound ruler whose power diminished as he went up in the higher weight division. The fight went to Guzman for the first two rounds but when Funeka found his range and landed solid shots against Guzman it was a clear victory for Funeka dominating Guzman till the final bell sounded.
And so we thought… the boxing world does it again robbery right in front of us and Ali Funeka had to take that bitter sweet moment wherein he dominated a super skilled fighter but got only a draw on the judge’s hands. He had all the bases covered and staggering Guzman with hard shots and came back after being dominated for the first two rounds it was like Funeka had all the buttons pushed but still failed to get a win. It was bad for boxing and it had stained the sport in years. So what does it take for a boxer to win? a good promotional company or a strong influential backup? Skills are just put aside as long as the fighter retains his unbeaten record.
Ali Funeka will have his rematch and hopefully justice will be served. They can’t protect their ward for too long. “Rush Hour” funny it may sound especially if you have been robbed in front of you in a rush.
