David Diaz the Warrior

David Diaz was bloodied, battered and motionless in the canvass as the referee hastily waved off the fight. It wasn’t how everybody expected the fight to end, after Diaz gamely traded punches against 27-year-old top prospect Henry “Hank” Lundy in Horseshoe Casino in nearby Hammond, IN.

This was again another setback to his career, another failed attempt to win back a championship belt. However, Diaz never failed to light up anybody’s boxing appetite. This was his promise—never back down and never gave up—and he paid dearly for it. He feels boxing needs good fights, blood, sweat and tears, and he is ready to give what the fans really wanted.

He knew the danger of slugging it out and moving forward, but he values every fan’s hard-earned money. He feels so much on how people struggled to make both ends meet. David had been a champion and for years he has been driving the same old Honda ’91 model with no air conditioning. He knows how it is to be in a tight situation.

No boring fights, no running…it’s going to be war and Diaz will go out with guns blazing.

It’s not that he has known only one direction in the ring; he had been a decorated amateur fighter, being part of the 1996 Olympic team, four-time Chicago Golden Gloves winner and three-time National Golden Gloves. However, he had to find a niche in boxing. People love an underdog who loves to fight and never afraid to lose. It rightfully fits his personality…he fights not only for boxing but for the people who love the art.

Diaz is like a combustible material whenever he goes in the ring. He is walking on a live wire on a thin line. Bigger and powerful punchers feast on him. But Diaz never felt threatened; there is no room for him to be afraid. As long as he can punch everything is equal. For most part of his career, he was successful. “It’s either I go down, or you will go down” mentality.

At 35 years old Diaz still feels he still can fight two to three more years, and wants a Lundy rematch. Even after his knockout loss to Kendall Holt and Manny Pacquiao his style never changed. It is unlikely to go to the same battle with the same game plan. However, this is David Diaz, the boxer who fights with his heart and never backs down.

I never get tired of seeing Diaz fight. It may be the same old cliché or the same old script, but he never fails to excite me.

Bloodied, battered and motionless…but that didn’t stop Diaz from getting up. He retires whenever he feels it’s time. Nobody can stop a tough hombre from Mexico. Nobody can. Not a punch and not even a slowly degrading skill. David Diaz continues to fight no matter how big or impossible. He lives and dies with his gloves on.

Victor Ortiz-Floyd Mayweather Jr. : Victor’s Reason to Succeed

Victor Ortiz posed his usual stance with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in their first press conference…

Everyone thought he was a southpaw, but actually, he is a natural right-hander. His defense is better and he packs so much power while fighting on his left hand. Nobody really noticed it and most of the time, no one really cared. It has always been like that for most part of his career—he was always underestimated and unnoticed, even after winning his WBC welterweight title against Andre Berto. It was a controversial win, with Berto accusing him of taking PEDS or steroids. However, Victor strived on the thought of winning…

Victor, at an early age of ten, has already dealt with life more than you can ever imagine. His mother left their family for another man and his father abandoned them five years later. He & his siblings were left to fend for themselves before going to foster care. Victor was bound to fail. Everyone expected him to go down and get buckled up. But despite the many reasons to fall, he found more reasons to succeed…

Victor always wanted a challenge and he wanted everyone to think that he cannot do it, that he is too small or just a hyped-up fighter. But in his heart, his fights were about his real struggles… his life. That was what made him a better fighter and a matured student of life…

This coming September 17 would be the biggest fight of his career, his biggest stage with this magnitude, against a top pound per pound fighter in Floyd Mayweather Jr. Of all the boxers that could match up with Mayweather, Victor is the perfect dancing rehearsal partner for his face-off with Manny Pacquiao someday. Will there really be a Pacquiao-Mayweather showdown? That remained a question and a trending topic, even at the Mayweather-Ortiz fight’s presscon. And once again, Victor, on his biggest fight, came unnoticed. But this is where he thrived most, behind the limelight…

This fight is not all about Victor’s claim to money and fame. This is for all the people who believed, for all who struggled and most of all, for the life he lived.

Everybody expected Victor to fall… the very reason why he always succeeds.

      Manny Pacquiao Tormentor’s Championship Dream

he sweat dripped on the boxing gym’s tattered canvas. Blood stains around the corners—a reminder of some hotly contested sparring sessions that happened in the past.

On the center of the ring, a 38 year old man with a receding hairline shadow-boxed. His eyes were fierce and focused. His body was still ripped as he masterfully memorized all the techniques he had learned throughout the years. “One-two, one-two” then quickly moved to another direction repeatedly chanting that mantra.

It has been 15 years since Rustico Torrecampo, fought against a lanky flyweight named Manny Pacquiao. However, it ended with a reversal of fortune. Rustico retired after seven fights at still 24 years old and Manny became what he is now—the world’s pound per pound king and the only eight-division world champion in boxing. Rustico vividly remembered how his timed left hit Manny straight in the jaw. It was in the third round, and Rustico was so sure Manny would never get up, even if the referee counts from one up to a hundred. It was one punch… one immortal punch that he will forever remember.
For years Rustico thought of what could have been if he continued fighting. He might have won a national championship and maybe world titles before enjoying a good retirement. Instead he ended up working for six days a week in a Metal factory and with a small business—selling noodles on the street.

Rustico injured his left wrist a month after his win with Pacquiao. He never went to a doctor and suffered 4 losses on six fights. And in 2007 he killed a garbage truck driver for bumping against his sidecar basically spilling his noodles. At 38 years old Rustico has never been this sure in getting back to boxing. His wrist has now fully healed, and his power is still there. He had a forgettable record, and no one really remembered how he looks. For some he was just the boxer who gave Manny his first taste of defeat.

As Rustico Torrecampo mimicked how he knocked out Pacquiao a group of trainers and boxers questioned him… Why are you getting back in boxing?
Rustico quickly replied “I just have to get what Manny left for me”…

His first comeback fight ended in a knockout against a debuting fighter. Rustico only needs that one opportunity, one championship chance… For him nothing is really impossible even with a forgettable record… even for a 38 year old with a receding hairline that still dreams of a championship whose one significant win has already been part of history.

“One-two, one-two” as Rustico repeatedly chanted.

Manny Pacquiao and the 10 Best Filipino Athletes

A group of Australians who visited here in the Philippines went to a garbage disposal place. Small children ran over and greeted them with all smiles. One member of the group broke down and cried. When asked about the incident she said “I lived my whole life in a nice home, nice clothes and a good paying job, but I wasn’t happy and here I am in a place where basically garbage became their homes and could barely afford decent slippers and they all came out happy and smiling…”

Filipinos are basically happy people because they always find a reason to be happy. Poverty is never a reason to give up. And many found inspiration on athletes who strived to succeed in spite being poor.

Manny Pacquiao embodies the inspiration and adulation of his countrymen because he is a growing symbol of success in spite the struggles of the nation. Allow me to enumerate the top ten Best Filipino athletes of all time.

        10. Carlos Loyzaga – Basketball has always been the number one sport in the Philippines. You go basically everywhere and you can see basketball courts from all corners to fiber glass and sophisticated ones, down to makeshift cardboards. Carlos “The big difference” Loyzaga stands only 6-foot-3 but plays the center position. He stirred the Philippine national team to a bronze medal finish in the 1954 FIBA world championship. It was the highest rank in any Asian team throughout the history of the tournament.

        9. Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco – Before Manny Pacquiao, boxing wasn’t a main attraction sport here in the Philippines. Onyok delivered the first jab before Pacquiao finished everything. Mansueto ended the 32-year drought set by Anthony Villanueva (silver medal) in the 1964 Olympics by winning his own medal, although Velasco only won the bronze medal, but it was much better than nothing. The Philippines still needs another Villanueva’s and Velasco’s out there, and who knows this might be gold in the making.

        8. Pancho Villa – real name Francisco Guilledo, stands only five-foot-one who fought 104 fights and died at a tender age of 23. He was considered the greatest flyweight of the century for becoming the first Asian world boxing champion. Unfortunately, he died from complications following a tooth extraction in July 14, 1925.

        7. Eugene Torre – The Asia’s first grandmaster in Chess in 1974 at the age of 22 and appeared in the Chess Olympics 20 times equaling Lajos Portisch of Hungary, who also played 20 Olympiads.

        6. Lydia De Vega – Lydia was the Asia’s fastest woman in 1980’s. She won the gold medal in the 1982 New Delhi Asiad 100-meter dash and 1986 Seoul Asiad. Unfortunately, Lydia had to look for a job elsewhere since there wasn’t any decent offer for her to stay. She is currently Singapore’s track and field coach.

        5. Francisco “Django” Bustamante – The world’s number one billiard player in 1998. He had 34 local and international medals, including the 2001 World pool masters and his recent 2010 World 9-ball Championship in Doha, Quatar. He holds the world record for having the most powerful break shot. The 47-year old Bustamante still plays professional billiard tournaments up to this day.

        4. Gabriel “Flash” Elorde – The name I never would forget. My favorite bread was named after him, called “Elorde”, shaped in boxing gloves.
After Pancho Villa, Elorde was the most popular boxer in the Philippines. He was dubbed as the greatest world junior lightweight boxing champion in WBC history. He defended his belt for ten bouts in a span of four years making him the longest reigning champion ever on his division. He became the only Asian to be inducted into the International boxing hall of fame. Elorde died of lung cancer at the age of 49. His two grandsons are also professional boxers.

        3. Efren Bata Reyes – The best billiard player of all time. Reyes was known as the “magician” had won numerous international awards, including five 8-ball championships, and 100 international awards. Efren still plays professional billiards up to this day.

        2. Manny Pacquiao – The current pound per pound king of boxing. Manny is the only fighter that won eight different division belts in boxing. The fighting congressman of the Philippines has yet to find his true match in Floyd Mayweather Jr. Manny is scheduled to fight his arch nemesis, Juan Manuel Marquez for the third time this November. Hopefully, a match with Floyd will happen early next year.

        1. Rafael “Paeng” Nepomuceno – Paeng is a six time World bowling champion. He was the youngest to win a World cup at the age of 19. He is the only bowler in the world, who has the most Bowling world cup wins and won the most the number of bowling tournament titles (120). He was also the first international male bowling athlete to be enshrined in the International Bowling Hall of Fame. He was the only Filipino athlete who has been given the highest award to three Philippine presidents. Paeng is still an active bowler up to this day at age 54.

Shane Mosley: In Defeat Shane Diverts to PEDS Accusation

“There is no defeat, except for those who give up”…

The 39 year old veteran Shane Mosley fought Manny Pacquiao last May 7 to survive. He was never in the ring to win after a devastating left straight floored him in the third round. It was a one sided fight all throughout.

It is human nature to survive and Mosley was only following what his instincts have told him. However, it was unlikely for a former champion to strike with a low blow. No, it didn’t happen while they were in the ring but outside of it. Shane who talked to fighthype.com said “I never fought nobody that hits like that. Never!”… Went into an unusual fight which he thinks he has a chance of winning. On his recent tweet he accused Manny of taking PEDs or performance enhancing drugs, on an article that according to an unnamed Filipino sparring partner of Manny who told a certain “mikejohnson313” about the alleged drug used that started way back in the Ricky Hatton fight.

It wasn’t to my surprise how anyone could make such stories and fabrications in the net. When you are on the top, a lot of people will praise and worship you. However, there will be people who will try to pull you down and discredit all your achievements. However, I was shock to know how Mosley could resort to that. He was always gracious in defeat and has been in the business for years. Everybody knows about the BALCO incident wherein Shane admitted in using steroids. He had been on that cycle for so long with people raising eyebrows whenever he wins a fight. He knows how it feels to be on that spot but the difference between him and Manny is Manny was never been proven guilty.

Manny never had a Filipino sparring partner for years. Basically since there is no prominent Filipino boxer that has the same weight level with Manny who could give him a real workout. And why does a certain “mikejohnson313” who writes in a free article submission site that majors in business and finance (www.financebusinessarticles.com) was given so much importance by Mosley? It’s because in the brink of defeat, Mosley had to cover up his lackluster performance. He had to make an excuse on why he opted to survive and not to win. And when there was no explanation to think of, he looks for something who could justify everything. Anyone could write fabrications and stories in this new technology world however, before jumping to conclusions you also have to look for credibility and substance. Or you’re just one of the thousands of people who believed they won an email lottery only to find out they have given out personal information to hackers.

Mosley thought he could persuade everybody and divert his no-show fight to PEDS accusation. However, everything backfired. The truth is he was just a defeated fighter who was a shell of his once self.

The old man fears defeat because of pride – he fears “failing himself,” – the old man and the sea.

Shane Mosley: What’s Next for the Aging Fighter After Loss to Manny Pacquiao?

Shane Mosley was dazed and confused in the third round when he was hit by a left straight by Manny Pacquiao. Mosley’s legs wobbled as he fell to the canvass. He was able to get up for the mandatory eight-count, as he shook his head in disbelief…

It was a great and solid punch and for a moment, he saw it coming, but he had done nothing to stop it. His reflexes seem to be out of tune nowadays. His punch still has the pop, but it was nowhere effective like it was two years ago when he fought Antonio Margarito.

He never thought this would come—the twilight of his Hall of Fame career. He still believed he still has fuel left in the tank. He could still go on, even if he is turning 40 years old four months from now. For years, he tried to defy logic by dominating young and hungry fighters.

Two years ago, he dominated Margarito in a fight everybody thought was a mismatched. Shane put on a masterful performance, putting the sturdy Mexican in a defensive mode. It was always one of his memorable experiences in the later part of his career. And it’s the one fight that keeps him moving on, looking for bigger oppositions and exciting competitions.

He fought Floyd Mayweather, Jr. to a unanimous decision loss, but Shane also had his moments there, when he almost knocked Mayweather out in the third round. The Sergio Mora fight ended with a lackluster split draw, but Shane was never dominated nor in trouble in that fight.

It was in the third round of the Manny Pacquiao fight that Shane had his realization.

For years, he had cheated father time and now time is catching up. He was never been dominated like that for years.

He was always the type of fighter that knows to adjust in the middle of the game. However, Pacquiao was a riddle that’s becoming hard to solve each round. He simply doesn’t have a solution to Manny’s onslaught.

Shane is still lucky to fight two pound-per-pound fighters in our era (Mayweather and Pacquiao). He could take pride in standing up to both of them. But somehow, there is always a time for everything.

Like a sunset that welcomes the dark night or the dawn that embraces the sunrise, everything ends and starts, that’s just how it is. For Shane Mosley this might be the end of his wonderful career.

His realization started on the third round.

It wasn’t how we thought the fight would go on. But it was expected, Mosley came out standing up and still swinging.

Manny Pacquiao: Ten Facts You Should Know About Manny

The eight world division weight title Manny Pacquiao will trade mitts with Shane Mosley in just a few days from now. The pressure is already rising up to a boiling point, and both fighters are willing and eager to settle everything out in the ring. I thought of putting some useful info on some facts that you should know about Manny Pacquiao.

          1. Edmund Engting Ignacio was Manny‘s first professional fight.
-Before the Pacquiao fight, Ignacio also fought Kid Emmanuel whose family name bores the same first name with Pacquiao. It was Kid’s last fight when he fought Ignacio, who’s record stands with one win and one loss. And while Ignacio after his Pacquiao loss fought 32 more times. He had only eight wins with 24 losses. At least he was literally called the Pacquiao stepping stone.

          2. Manny’s first knock out loss was in the hands of Rustico Torrecampo. The fight was a slugfest right from the opening round until Torrecampo’s left hook landed right straight into Pacquiao’s chin. Manny never recovered after that hit as the referee stop counting and declared Rustico as the winner via a third round knockout. However, it was the only meaningful fight on Torrecampo’s career. After being wanted for killing a garbage truck driver, Rustico after a 14 year hiatus returned to box with a win against Jovanie Bualan last February 19.

          3. Chatchai Sasakul was Manny‘s first title fight for the WBC flyweight title. Sasakul was knocked out on his own turf in Thailand in just eight rounds. He is now retired and had 65 wins (40 KOs) with four losses. He was also the boxer who killed the Filipino journey man, Lito Sisnorio in a mismatch that ended in a four round knockout.

          4. Lehlonolo Ledwaba who gave Manny his big break in the U.S. never really recovered after his defeat with Pacquiao. He was dubbed as “hands of stone” he only won three out of his last seven fights. He was the most feared bantamweight fighter for years until Manny broke his invincibility.

          5. Gerry Penalosa, the two-time division champion is Manny‘s closest friend and also his sparring partner before. Rumors have it that their sparring was so intense that they took turns in knocking each other down. That happened of course when Manny was still fighting in the lower division.

          6. After salvaging a draw against the tough Mexican, Juan Manuel Marquez. Pacquiao and his team offered Marquez a rematch right after the fight. Marquez, however, wanted a bigger purse and turned down the offer. However, what’s mind boggling is he opted to fight Chris John all the way to Indonesia, one-fourth of what Pacquiao was offering. The rematch with Pacquiao, however, happened four years after. We are still waiting for the third and final match.

          7. His last loss was in the hands of Erik Morales way back in 2005. Since then he racked up 13 straight wins including four division weight titles. Erik who recently turned back the hands of time on his gutsy fight with Marcos Maidana is willing to slug it out with Manny again, but I doubt if that fight happens. We will be seeing Erik in the ring this July 30 with still an unknown opponent, a Maidana rematch perhaps?

          8. The fight with Oscar De La Hoya was the brain child of HBO’s boxing analyst Larry Merchant. It was named the Dream Match. Many laughed at the thought of the smaller Pacquiao slaying a former middleweight fighter, especially with Manny, who mainly campaigns in the super feather weight division at that time. Pacquiao who recently fought David Diaz as a lightweight move two division higher to face De La Hoya as a welterweight.

          9. Manny Pacquiao’s success in moving up in weight has something to do with his 8 inch wrist. Juan Manuel Marquez has only 6.5 inch wrist, and statistically a heavy weight fighter usually has an average of 7.69 inch wrist. Joe Luiz and Mike Tyson have the same wrist as Manny but those two fighters are fighting in the heavy weight division. This was stated by Leandro Solis on the badlefthook.com article. So imagine Manny as a Bantamweight fighter that packs a heavy weight punch. That can be very scary.

          10. Manny Pacquiao who is 32 years old will be fighting the 39-year old “Sugar” Shane Mosley this Saturday. Mosley at Pacquiao’s age was fighting two times that year with only one opponent named Ronald “Winky” Wright. Both fights, Mosley lost via decision. The two fights were for the unification of the light middleweight titles with a total of five championship belts on the line.
