Chris Moneymaker’s Lucky 39

“39” is just a number for most of us. However, for some like Chris Moneymaker who is a master’s degree in accounting, it was one lucky number. It made his $39 investment into a whopping $2.5 million…

Chris walked into a sea of people in the 2003 World Series of Poker at Binion’s horseshoe with a mindset of “nothing to lose and more to gain.” This was his first live poker tournament. And Chris has carefully remembered what he had learned all these years playing poker.

He fondly recalled all those sleepless nights and the movie “rounders” which got him hooked up playing poker. He remembered his first online poker game, when a friend introduced him after seeing Chris wanting to enhance his skills but had to drive a four-hour trip to go to the nearest casino.
This wasn’t luck; this was all Chris’ hard work—a summation of everything that he had hoped for.

Then he remembered his wife, worrying about her maternity leave, then all his mortgages. His father and a closed friend who had helped him pay his travel expenses. Then all those worries, doubts and uncertainties slowly disappeared and were replaced with hope, determination and optimism.
Moneymaker an amateur poker player went as far as the final round of the WSOP. The virtually unknown Chris went against high profile poker stars such as Sam Farha, WSOP 1995 champion Dan Harrington, Chris Ferguson (WSOP 2000 champion) and a lot more. Chris’ winning hand came after, he got a five and four card that beat Farha’s Jack and a ten in the championship round. When the dealer flopped, he was ahead by two pairs J-5-4. And when the river came Chris’ heart pumped faster after it flopped with an eight and a five. “Full house” as Moneymaker pumped his fist in the air while giving his father a bear hug.

This was a fairy tale story that somehow ended with David conquering more Goliaths in one battlefield. Nobody in the history of the game that made Poker such a global entity than Chris Moneymaker, his story is not about luck; it is all about hope. Everyone is always capable of getting to the top…

I have worked as a Tournament online poker admin to most popular poker sites before, and it never failed to amaze me on the number of players playing the $39 satellite tournament.

For some 39 is just a number… but for most online poker addicts, it symbolizes hope.

Manny Pacquiao Vs. Floyd Mayweather: Will the Super-Fight Finally Happen?

An exuberant Floyd Mayweather Jr. was shown on HBO 24/7 working hard at 1 am in the morning. Then someone said that “while everybody is sleeping, we are working.” However, right across the Pacific, right along the small city in the islands of the Philippines, Manny Pacquiao has just started his day working out, doing his usual routine.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao are two different individuals but have been bonded by one common thing and one common trait… greatness.

They are the two best fighters in the world and the two biggest names in boxing. In a perfect world, we would love to watch the two fighters fight and square it all off in the ring. However, beyond the realms of the four cornered ring, there are repercussions in making this super fight. Both fighters got their demands and both fighters ego and pride needs to be met. It has been almost two years since the initial talks started and for the most part, it all ended with both parties in disagreement. This is seemingly normal with the fight this magnitude it needs enough time and some sacrifices for this to work. The world has been patiently waiting, lurking and anticipating. This has become the nurtured plant that is slowly growing its first fruit.

This needs to happen, boxing needs it and the people’s uproar is becoming to be deafening. Both fighter’s legacies depend on it.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. unceremoniously knocked Victor Ortiz out when Victor became too friendly and failed to protect himself on their fight last Saturday. It was a legit punch, but it shows Floyd’s true nature—he wants to win, and he will do anything to protect his immaculate record.

There is a big contrast on how Manny Pacquiao could have done if he were in Floyd’s shoes—there is always a room for an apologetic person.

Floyd and Manny are two very different persons. Floyd comes to the ring with bravado while Manny goes directly into a corner and pray. However, they have similarities when it comes to charisma and showmanship. They are connected with the same destiny… and if for some instance, this super fight won’t happen then each fighter leaves a stain on their legacy.

Amidst, all the talk about 2012 as the end of the world we anticipate the clash between the two best fighters in our generation. The winner takes it all, but the loser will still remain a legend.

As Floyd took care of Victor Ortiz, now Manny will have to take care of Juan Manuel Marquez this November. One good performance against another… like the day welcoming the night… both are connected and yet so different. This fight will happen… at least if the Mayans believed next year would be the end of the world, we die happy.

Manny Pacquiao and the 10 Best Filipino Athletes

A group of Australians who visited here in the Philippines went to a garbage disposal place. Small children ran over and greeted them with all smiles. One member of the group broke down and cried. When asked about the incident she said “I lived my whole life in a nice home, nice clothes and a good paying job, but I wasn’t happy and here I am in a place where basically garbage became their homes and could barely afford decent slippers and they all came out happy and smiling…”

Filipinos are basically happy people because they always find a reason to be happy. Poverty is never a reason to give up. And many found inspiration on athletes who strived to succeed in spite being poor.

Manny Pacquiao embodies the inspiration and adulation of his countrymen because he is a growing symbol of success in spite the struggles of the nation. Allow me to enumerate the top ten Best Filipino athletes of all time.

      10. Carlos Loyzaga – Basketball has always been the number one sport in the Philippines. You go basically everywhere and you can see basketball courts from all corners to fiber glass and sophisticated ones, down to makeshift cardboards. Carlos “The big difference” Loyzaga stands only 6-foot-3 but plays the center position. He stirred the Philippine national team to a bronze medal finish in the 1954 FIBA world championship. It was the highest rank in any Asian team throughout the history of the tournament.

      9. Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco – Before Manny Pacquiao, boxing wasn’t a main attraction sport here in the Philippines. Onyok delivered the first jab before Pacquiao finished everything. Mansueto ended the 32-year drought set by Anthony Villanueva (silver medal) in the 1964 Olympics by winning his own medal, although Velasco only won the bronze medal, but it was much better than nothing. The Philippines still needs another Villanueva’s and Velasco’s out there, and who knows this might be gold in the making.

      8. Pancho Villa – real name Francisco Guilledo, stands only five-foot-one who fought 104 fights and died at a tender age of 23. He was considered the greatest flyweight of the century for becoming the first Asian world boxing champion. Unfortunately, he died from complications following a tooth extraction in July 14, 1925.

      7. Eugene Torre – The Asia’s first grandmaster in Chess in 1974 at the age of 22 and appeared in the Chess Olympics 20 times equaling Lajos Portisch of Hungary, who also played 20 Olympiads.

      6. Lydia De Vega – Lydia was the Asia’s fastest woman in 1980’s. She won the gold medal in the 1982 New Delhi Asiad 100-meter dash and 1986 Seoul Asiad. Unfortunately, Lydia had to look for a job elsewhere since there wasn’t any decent offer for her to stay. She is currently Singapore’s track and field coach.

      5. Francisco “Django” Bustamante – The world’s number one billiard player in 1998. He had 34 local and international medals, including the 2001 World pool masters and his recent 2010 World 9-ball Championship in Doha, Quatar. He holds the world record for having the most powerful break shot. The 47-year old Bustamante still plays professional billiard tournaments up to this day.

      4. Gabriel “Flash” Elorde – The name I never would forget. My favorite bread was named after him, called “Elorde”, shaped in boxing gloves.
After Pancho Villa, Elorde was the most popular boxer in the Philippines. He was dubbed as the greatest world junior lightweight boxing champion in WBC history. He defended his belt for ten bouts in a span of four years making him the longest reigning champion ever on his division. He became the only Asian to be inducted into the International boxing hall of fame. Elorde died of lung cancer at the age of 49. His two grandsons are also professional boxers.

      3. Efren Bata Reyes – The best billiard player of all time. Reyes was known as the “magician” had won numerous international awards, including five 8-ball championships, and 100 international awards. Efren still plays professional billiards up to this day.

      2. Manny Pacquiao – The current pound per pound king of boxing. Manny is the only fighter that won eight different division belts in boxing. The fighting congressman of the Philippines has yet to find his true match in Floyd Mayweather Jr. Manny is scheduled to fight his arch nemesis, Juan Manuel Marquez for the third time this November. Hopefully, a match with Floyd will happen early next year.

      1. Rafael “Paeng” Nepomuceno – Paeng is a six time World bowling champion. He was the youngest to win a World cup at the age of 19. He is the only bowler in the world, who has the most Bowling world cup wins and won the most the number of bowling tournament titles (120). He was also the first international male bowling athlete to be enshrined in the International Bowling Hall of Fame. He was the only Filipino athlete who has been given the highest award to three Philippine presidents. Paeng is still an active bowler up to this day at age 54.

        Nobuhiro Ishida: Japan’s New Superhero

When you talk about Nobuhiro Ishida’s performance last Saturday against former undefeated fighter James Kirkland, his chinky eyes grew big.

It was the best boxing performance on his career. Nobody knew about Ishida’s decorated amateur background (101-15) or his 23 wins with only 8 coming from knockouts. But everybody will now remember how a lanky six-foot-one fighter from Japan won a first round technical knockout against the once feared and hard hitting Kirkland.

It was a special win for Ishida not because he scored the biggest upset of the year, but because it was a fight that he needed to win to uplift the spirit of a nation devastated by a catastrophe.

The moment he raised his hands up in victory. He thought about all the people putting all their hopes on him. He thought about all the pains and hardships they have encountered.

Everything is now all worth it…

Ishida was the biggest underdog going to the fight, a sacrificial lamb whose fate was a mere punching bag or a sparring partner. He was brought in to boost Kirkland’s undefeated record. However, someone must have fallen asleep and gave Ishida a different script. Everyone already expected a knockout but nobody predicted it would come from the other side of the corner. Not with a 35 year old fighter which may have been way past his prime and fights with a measly 35 percent knockout ratio.

We could never know if Ishida is a one hit wonder or a future opponent to the division’s kingpin Sergio Martinez. However, even for just one fight and one magical moment, Ishida brought a smile to his grieving countrymen. An inspiration for everyone who no matter how big or how difficult life takes us, we never stop punching.

Japan needs a superhero and they are lucky to have one.

        Brandon Vera’s Open Door

They say when one door closes another door opens. Brandon Vera knows his door has slowly been shut after failing to secure a win on his last three fights. His contract with UFC has ended after a unanimous decision loss to Thiago Silva at UFC 125.

Vera is now backed to the drawing board, back to where he started and now back to reality. He was lucky he got the opportunity to fight in the UFC after thousands of fighters waiting for their chance. And now his luck has slowly faded.

“The truth” is a typical “tweener” who fights as a heavyweight and as a light heavyweight. He was riding an eight game winning streak with notable wins against Frank Mir and Assuerio Silva, before losing twice against Tim Sylvia (UD) and Fabricio Werdum (TKO). He moved down to light heavyweight and still came out unsuccessful, winning only three out of his last seven fights. “The truth” will have to learn how it is in the real world—the truth always hurts.

He was no longer the feared fighter that was knocking everybody out in the UFC. His fan base has slowly been making an exodus out of frustrations. And his contract has just ended.

Suddenly, everything was like a gyrating ball going up and goes rapidly down. The once promising fighter came short of a promise.

Thiago Silva after his fight with Vera failed the drug test when the Nevada State Athletic Commission found Silva’s urine sample “inconsistent with human urine”. This was a vindication for Brandon’s loss, which was later turned into a no-contest. This means he is reinstated back into the UFC. But more to that Brandon has been given a chance, an opportunity to prove all the doubters wrong.

One door closes and another door opens for Brandon. This is the time to reinvent himself, learn new things and go to fight with an element of surprise. He should never stop learning because there will always be someone out there who will be better.

He has been given a chance, a new lease of life now all he has to do is make the best out of it. Nobody said it was easy to get to the top but nobody said it’s impossible.

Brandon Vera knows its make or break this time. When a door closes all you have to do is just open it.

Erik Morales-Marcos Maidana: Mind over Matter

Erik Morales had never worked at this hard before on training. His tired legs and his battle-scarred body seem weary with each extended minutes in the gym or in the road. But with mind over matter Erik, always finds a way to make it through the day.
He doesn’t want to know how many discarded him as a serious contender or a fighter that is way past his prime. He still believes that he can win and in April 9, he thinks he will shock the world with a win against the dangerous Marcos Maidana. Mind over matter as Erik repeatedly put on his head… reciting that mantra with each hurdle and each pain, he goes through training.

Losing 4 out of his last seven fights is not so encouraging. However, Erik did the unthinkable by choosing to fight the toughest in the 140-lb division. Marcos Maidana was known for fighting Amir Khan for twelve full rounds giving Amir, problems in the later rounds before losing to a unanimous decision. He also fought Victor Ortiz wherein he was knocked down thrice before knocking Ortiz out in the sixth round. You may have to wonder why he chose the dangerous path when he is already nearing the finish line. He may have seen something in Maidana that made him, excited to fight him.

The pressure style of Maidana is a tailor-made fight for Morales. Maidana is susceptible to Morales’ counterpunches while pressing forward. However, he is now only a shade of the fighter he once was. Those reflexes have slowly betrayed him, losing a step each fight and each year as he prolongs his career. 34 years old may not be that old but with all the battles from amateur all the way to 57 professional fights Erik, with his all out style fights have slowly taken its toll.

But he would never be deterred… He thinks he can win against Maidana… mind over matter.

He wanted everyone to know that he still has it. Just like a “Rocky” movie going for one last time, one last chance of becoming a champion. The critics can say what they want to say. He knows he will win and at the end of the fight. He will be the only Mexican fighter that wins an unprecedented fourth division title. Mind over matter…

Erik Morales always finds a way, but I doubt if he ever makes it through this Saturday.

New Orleans Hornets: David West’s Uncertain, Certain Future

March 24, 2011, the date David West will forever remember. With 22.3 seconds left before the end of regulation David, tore his Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) against the Utah Jazz. It was a game tying dunk as he made a “pick and roll play” with Chris Paul and go straight to the basket. However, the one-handed power slam ended with a one-leg falling out awkwardly. The moment his left knee touches the ground with his whole weight on it, he knew it was over… the end of his season, the end of getting past the second round in the playoffs and might be the end of his magical career.

It happened in an inopportune time when the Hornets are making their playoff run with Chris Paul also playing with an injured knee. This is West’s contract year, hitting the open market in the off season. Now everything is put behind the mist of uncertainty.

There aren’t many players who had an ACL injury and came back 100 percent. It would take a lot of rehabilitating and a lot of patience in getting back to form.

Luckily, for David with the looming lockout season it would buy him enough time for his comeback.

West is still a valuable player any team would want. He has a variety of post moves and can shoot midrange jumpers. He sets good picks and has mid-level defense. He is the Hornets leading scorer and Carl Landry (West backup) will have to do more to cover up the hole being vacated. There aren’t many ACL injured players who came back successful but there are only a handful of players who is unselfish and still leads his team in scoring like David. And there are hardly any player who stands 7-foot tall and has a number of offensive moves and a shooting touch.

David West took this whole situation as a positive thing to his career. It’s likely because he couldn’t do anything about it, but also it’s because it has given him a new dimension, a new perspective to look for some ways to get effective when he comes back.

The New Orleans Hornets won that ball game against the Utah Jazz in overtime with Emeka Okafor hitting a miracle shot to force OT. David West witness two unlikely situations. One is his season ending injury and the other a miracle… Somehow everything will be okay we just have to believe miracles happen.

Bernard Hopkins-Jean Pascal: Making Your Own Prison, Another Steroids Accusation

Edwin Arnold said “Within yourself deliverance must be searched for, because each man makes his own prison”. Bernard Hopkins took that quote literally. Bernard has gone to prison at an early age of 17 for nine counts of felony with 18 years life sentenced. He had seen the worst with murders and rape over petty things. And after serving five years in prison Hopkins was released, he promised he would never go back to that life again… He will take each day as a celebration of freedom with boxing as his outlet—the only norm on his crazy prison life.

29 years after at age 46, Bernard is still in the business. While his other counter parts are one by one retiring, he still looks for greater oppositions… He wanted new mountains to climb and new adventures to conquer. He just couldn’t let go of his haven, his happy memory when things don’t go the way he wanted. Boxing has always been his refuge, his strength and his constant companion. That’s why he doesn’t like anybody questioning his dedication and his love to the sport. It took him years in enhancing his craft. Buckets of blood and sweat have been his investment.

That’s why when Jean Pascal his May 21 opponent accuses him of taking steroids and asks him to take the test. It was more like a slap on his face. The normally trash talking Hopkins was oddly quiet and responded with a two-hand shove to Pascal.

This is an aftermath with all the steroid accusations in boxing. If anyone goes beyond expectations than he must be on steroids. All the achievements and accolades would always be the “doubting Thomas” behind it. However, the fact that all those accusations have never been proven means it’s a pointless debate. This is a roller coaster ride with up and down on who is wrong or right. But somewhere down the line everything has got to stop. He who doesn’t sin should cast the first stone.

Bernard Hopkins knew that steroids and PEDS are a form of cheating. He had been that road before. He would never do anything to break his sanctuary, or to take him out of something that became his sanity beyond prison walls.

Boxing has freed him beyond those iron grills and beyond making your own prison.
