Shaquille Oneal’s continuing bashing of the 23 year old Dwight Howard has got to end. There is no reason to rip the young center with harsh words and disrespecting demeanor especially when Dwight idolizes Shaq emulating his power plays and explosive dunks in some ways. “I can’t tell you why he’s said a lot of discouraging things,” Howard said at the Staples Center. “I wish he wouldn’t say it because he’s one of the few guys that we all look up to.” Oneal had no preference in badmouthing anybody. There was his favorite subject Kobe Bryant, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Arvidas Sibonis and centers before and after him his afraid of competition and at age 37 where his legacy had already been cemented he feels Dwight has already taken his limelight. He sees a mirror of himself when he was still a young rookie taking his team to an unbelievable finals appearance. He wanted Dwight to loose all four games and winning is not an option knowing it’s the only thing he didn’t get when they played with the Houston Rockets in the 1993 NBA finals.
Michael Jordan praise Kobe and Julius Erving did the same to Mike it doesn’t matter to them if Lebron, Kobe and Wade imitates them they feel it’s the highest point of appreciation for what they do in the game. They never felt insecure in anyway because they knew no matter what their legacy is intact and untainted.
At age 37 who now average 17.8 points and 8.4 rebounds is way at par with Kareem when he was a 37 year old cager averaging 22 points per game. He doesn’t command double teams like he was before and teams are in doubt to sign him up taking his 20 million dollar contract. Winning 4 championships… 3 with the Lakers and 1 with the Miami Heat, Shaq wouldn’t have to feel insecure with a resurgent center or Kobe winning his fourth title without him there’s no way it could replace his name in history there’s no way it could erase all his achievements he made in the game. He made the rim Shaq-proof, goes to the basket with the Shaq-attack and even fouling him with hack-a-Shaq… Yes Dwight will eventually be the next superman and it isn’t a crime to idolize someone like Shaq. But Oneal lacks the maturity and is clearly a person who isn’t sure about where he’s going… Dwight who doesn’t swear in the ball game and is love by people will have to look for another idol because we don’t want him to be the next Shaq… he is far more class and reserve than him.
