The unconquerable walls of Jericho, is like Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s infamous “Shoulder roll defense”. 47 tried, and all failed. It’s the oldest defensive techniques in boxing and yet, only a few learned to master it. Mayweather’s shoulder roll is also known within the boxing circles as the “Michigan Shell”.
This was made popular by James Toney, Chris Byrd and the Mayweathers (Jr. and Sr.). Although a lot of fighters tried to imitate and employ this defensive technique, those who have good reflexes and natural gifts usually the ones who can master this and exploit to their advantage.
The Master Class
What is a Shoulder Roll
The “Shoulder Roll” is a defensive technique where you deflect a punch by rolling away your shoulders from it. For gifted athlete with good boxing IQ like Floyd Mayweather Jr. he can block multiple combinations just by rolling his shoulders back and forth. Then counters with solid shots that frustrates and bewildered aggressive opponents. The “Shoulder roll” is more effective than blocking power shots with your hands. Rolling away deflects the power and minimize impact even if it lands.
May 2 would be Manny Pacquiao’s toughest test when he faces Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the ring. Manny will not just try to win the fight, but will also try to crack Floyd’s “shoulder roll” defense. We all know Floyd can handle volume punchers like Diego Corrales, Arturo Gatti, Marcos Maidana, Miguel Cotto, Saul Alvarez and a lot more. So aggressiveness is not the key to break Floyd’s defense.
Here are ways for Manny Pacquiao to win and finally decipher Floyd’s Shoulder Roll defense.
Speed and Power
If you go through Floyd’s 47 wins, I can’t see anyone on his list who has the speed and power that Manny possesses. Floyd can “shoulder roll” all he can, but Manny can destroy Floyd, long before he can set up his defense.
What makes Manny different is, he is an unorthodox type of fighter. He gives you weird and different angles, something that most of his opponents never saw it coming. While Floyd goes to his shell defense, Manny can throw weird angle punches when Floyd tries to counter.
Punching Floyd’s shoulders
In order to break the wall, you have to hit the wall. When Floyd is on his defensive stance, All Manny had to do is hit as hard as he can on Floyd’s shoulder. If you have a sore shoulder it’s hard to roll it out and your punches and reflexes will be affected. Remember the shoulder is the largest and most vulnerable joints in the human anatomy, a rotator cuff injury also increases with age, and at 38 years old and way past his prime, Floyd can be very vulnerable with that.
Unless your name is Danny Williams…
The Israelites have to march their way for 7 days just to crack the walls of Jericho. Whatever it is, my point is they have the perfect game plan. That’s how you win fights… game plan. Even if Floyd’s unconquerable defense can frustrate Manny. A perfect execution peppered with sheer will, can make a difference.
No wall is too high, or too strong for a determined fighter.
