Bill Simmon’s asked Isiah Thomas on his book entitled “The Book of Basketball” what is the “Secret”? And Thomas answered “the secret about basketball is that it’s not about basketball”…
The thought itself is already complex and you have to read it over again just to make sense. That is just typical Isiah; you just have to look deeper just to understand him.
It was mind boggling how those fat contracts ended up on Jerome James, Eddy Curry and problematic players such as Stephon Marbury and Steve Francis’s hands when Thomas was still the Knicks president. The team at one time came up as the highest payroll in the NBA and was the league’s second worst record. It must have been something special that James Nolan the Knicks owner saw in Thomas that he still hired him as the team consultant after all the hiatus that happened in 2003-08. Maybe it was Thomas’s blind passes and kamikaze drives that still left Nolan mesmerize until now or maybe Nolan look deeper in Isiah’s soul and saw someone who really needs help. But help was always readily available for Isiah and somewhere down the line maybe he just doesn’t need of any.
The latest scandal could really put an end to Thomas’s reign as part of the Knicks and a start of brighter and better beginnings for the fans in New York. The NBA is closely investigating on a possibly illegal pre-draft workout the Knicks held with college players and prospects when Isiah was still the team’s president and If found guilty the team could be subjected to league sanctions and forfeited draft picks in years to come. You just have to be dumbfounded to know that after all the unlikely advantages Isiah did they still found themselves at the bottom of the standings. Isiah even wanted to draft Chris Taft instead of David Lee in the 2005 draft but was persuaded to change his stand and pick Lee instead.
It looks like James Nolan had enough of Isiah. His actions were uncalled for. He believes everything Thomas says and everything he wants to deliver for the team. No one ever believes when he said that he would bring a championship trophy to the Knicks but not Nolan. But now all of that trust has been broken. The only person who continues to accept his prodigal son had enough.
Somehow everything made sense now. The secret about basketball is that it’s not about basketball after all. You have to dig deeper to get a better view. Basketball is like life, you just have to make the most out of it and for Isiah his time is up.
