One of the storylines going into day three of the NFL draft revolved around which team would take a chance on Marcus Lattimore. The talented running back from South Carolina is still in the process of recovering from a serious knee injury, which will more than likely keep him out until the start of the 2014 season. However, when the San Francisco 49ers took him in the fourth round, Lattimore found himself in a great situation with very little pressure.
As has been the case for a while now, Frank Gore will be the featured back for the San Francisco 49ers in 2013. He will get the majority of the snaps, but both Kendall Hunter and LaMichael James have shown flashes of brilliance as well.
It is actually somewhat fitting that Frank Gore will be the mentor of Lattimore. There was a time when Gore was struggling with injuries in his career, and people were ready to count him out. Having a support system setup for Lattimore in San Francisco should allow him to ease into the NFL playing style once he is officially healthy.
Since Lattimore was only a fourth round pick, the 49ers were able to get some needed help in other areas before picking up the running back. This would be a silly pick earlier than the fourth round for San Francisco, because they need immediate help to get over the Super Bowl hump with the team they have. However, once Lattimore dropped to the fourth round, this was the perfect opportunity for them to reload with a player that is very similar to Gore.
Even in 2014, Lattimore is not going to be expected to take over the lead running back role. No one knows for sure how good he will be once healthy, but success stories in the last few years certainly work in his favor, he definitely has the potential to be a fantasy football sleeper pick. The best part is he will go to a solid team that will not have to overwork him.
