Hi everyone! This is our first edition mail bag. I thought it would be best to put all your questions into one article per week. Big thanks to those people who spent time to email me and give insightful thoughts about boxing and basketball in particular. To quote Susan Lendroth “To write is human, to receive a letter: Devine!” So guys keep your questions coming and let’s all have fun.

Is there any merit to the recent news by Boxing 24 that based on actual punches landed, Pacquiao really won the fight against Mayweather?
I’ve seen similar claims on YouTube by Thunderdomeboxingtalk, Entertheareaus and elsewhere, where they examined the fight on mute and in slow motion.
You know, there might be a real important story here, since it says a lot about how inaccurate CompuBox might be. I’d hate to lose a substantial Vegas bet because of faulty scoring.
I’m not a reporter, so neither have the time nor resources to devote to this, but perhaps you might. With that said, what if you had some people in your office carefully re-watch, in slow motion and in mute, the following Mayweather bouts:
1) Castillo 1
2) De la Hoya
3) Maidana 1
5) and, perhaps, Cotto.
You might be surprised to find that CompuBox was wrong in at least one of them, proving that CompuBox is inaccurate and that Mayweather is not undefeated.
I can tell you for sure, if that’s the case, you’ll be a hero in the Philippines and to most American women… just saying…
I like the last part… maybe I’ll join the elections next year. But kidding aside, I watched it myself in slow motion there are really close calls on some rounds that could go either way. But for sure it will go to their hometown cash cow Floyd. Anyway Compubox is not in any way related to boxing’s commission nor its judges. It is an independent entity used for the sake of statistics, just like what basketball and some sports are doing right now. It is really not accurate, why? It’s because it is manually recorded, meaning it is still dependent on the person in charge near the ring to count the punches. Which can really be manipulated, just like what happened last May 2. The system calls for two operators. Each operator watches one of the two fighters and has access to four keys, corresponding to jab connect, jab miss, power punch connect, and power punch miss. The operators key in the different punches as they happen, collecting punch counts and hit percentages along the way. So it’s still prone for human error, and it still can be manipulated. For me, I really thought Manny won the fight or deserves a draw… but that’s why boxing has continued to fade because of different controversies… Anyway, I would love to hear your thoughts on this one… Let’s share some insights…
Thanks for emailing
I don’t know if you are familiar with Wesley So…he is a Filipino who is now top 10 in the world in chess rankings. His name is even circulated and talked about in Manny Pacquiao blog. If u can include him in your write up someday. It would be great. By the way chess has experience surged audience in internet arena…
Yep, Wesley So is a good chess player! And I would love to do an article of him someday especially with the recent change of loyalty from Philippine to American chess. For now, I got my hands tied up with the Pacquiao fight and the NBA playoffs. But for sure, I’ll be doing an article on him. Thank you for your email.
You write really well, we always read your articles
Thank you! Kind words like this, keeps me going like an energizer bunny.
