Years ago after Manny Pacquiao won his fight against the Golden Boy Oscar De La Hoya. Manny went on to Freddie Roach and said “I want to fight Margarito” There were no reservations and no fear in spite having fought David Diaz months before as a lightweight and Margarito campaigns mostly as a welterweight. All the physical attributes seem to be going on Margarito’s side but Manny knows he can take him, and 3 fights after his wish is finally granted.
Antonio Margarito comes into the fight as an underdog. He knows opportunity like this comes in one in a million. His size would be his advantage and he is expected to make good use of it.
Let’s tackle three good points to come up with our fearless forecast for this fight:
Size and Height
-This is a clear and given advantage by Margarito, but Antonio fights small. What I mean about this is he doesn’t use his advantages more often. He always neglects his jab and goes toe to toe attacking the body which means he bends his body more to get into his target. But that doesn’t take away the fact that Margarito is still big and could weigh 10 pounds more in fight night. He could still punch his way out of trouble and at that weight one punch could really make a difference.
-Weeks before the fight the sluggish Pacquiao looks slow and bloated. Manny admitted that he neglected strengthening coach Ariza’s plan to pack some pounds up because it made him slow and predictable. Manny could never matchup Margarito’s advantage but instead enhance more his own and that is his speed. Margarito is very predictable and his punches are wide and susceptible to Manny’s deadly combinations.
-This is a toss coin for both fighters. Manny won most of his fights in TKO but moving up in weight it takes him more rounds and accumulation of punches to win his fights. Margarito was a known power puncher but after his hand wrap incident suddenly his power is questionable with a losing effort against the aging Shane Mosley and failed to dispose a relatively unknown Robert Garcia on his last fight. I would go to Manny in this department because he made a short workout against Ricky Hatton, won a TKO against a stronger Miguel Cotto and dominated the sturdy Joshua Clottey.
Margarito doesn’t want to hear how Manny would dominate him on their fight; He doesn’t care about being an underdog. He knows he worked doubly hard in training camp and he knows he would win a knockout but like they say no matter how good you are, there is always someone better.
Fearless Forecast: Manny by TKO in 5 rounds.
