Juan Agudelo achieved instant stardom when he scored during his debut with the U.S. National Team when he was just 17 years old. That was only a month after he made his club debut for the New York Red Bulls and rose to prominence during the 2010 play-offs.
That was two years ago, and Agudelo is now playing for Club Deportivo Chivas USA, an American professional soccer team located on the outskirts of Los Angeles, California. This team competes in Major League Soccer (MLS).
As the Chivas USA forward, Agudelo has already been given 16 caps by the United States National Team. But his career recently stalled because of injuries.
Agudelo is a talented young athlete who has never hidden his long-term goals of moving to Europe to play with a soccer team located there. He`s mentioned in interviews that playing for a European team has been on his mind, for as long as he`s played soccer, because that`s where he feels the best soccer is being played. Mr. Agudelo said he would really embrace the opportunity to move to Scotland and has expressed a desire to play for the SPL.
It`s possible he could achieve his goals and become a part of the SPL`s Celtic soccer team located in Glasgow. Agudelo got one step closer to achieving his dream by training with the Scottish Premier League (SPL) squad to gain experience during the MLS off-season.
Neill Lennon, the manager of the Celtic team, noted how impressed he and his backroom team were with Agudelo and hoped to have a chance to speak with the young man`s representatives. Despite the rumors in the tabloids, no talks have taken place, however. He still has one year remaining on his current contract with his MLS club anyway.
But Juan Agudelo was blown away by the passion of the Celtic fans, stating that to them, the sport is almost a religion. Agudelo would enjoy having the support of the entire city. Of course, it doesn`t hurt that Celtic are consistently in the Champions League.
Agudelo`s short stay in Glasgow, Scotland, received encouragement from Jurgen Klinsmann, the national coach, who also supported his stay in Liverpool and Stuttgart. The German manager likes his American players to experience soccer outside of their own league.
Agudelo is the youngest ever goal scorer with the U.S. national team. However, he notes that he wants to keep humble and not become so hyped up that he loses respect for his sport. He just plans to keep focused and keep training hard every day.
He does admit, however, that being the youngest goal scorer ever was definitely a career booster. Hopefully, for him at least, it will boost his career all the way to Scotland.
